Name of the Month
"Tammuz" is the Babylonian name
of this month, as are all of the "official" names of the months in
the Hebrew Calendar. In the Bible, however, the month is referred to as
"the Fourth Month," with reference to Nisan, the First Month. Tenth
of the civil year.
Biblical Significance
of the Month
As mentioned above, the name which
"came up" from Babylon with the Jewish People was Tammuz. In this
case, consideration of the use of the name in Yechezkel would make it
appropriate to say that the name "Tammuz" brought down the Jewish
People. The verse in Yechezkel cited above speaks of the worship of a
Babylonian idol, known as "Tammuz." And it seems most odd, at first
glance, that this name would be chosen as the name of a Hebrew month.
However, in the context of the month that
we are dealing with, a month of tragedies which would lead to still greater
tragedies, the appropriateness of the name becomes clear. The Prophet Yechezkel
was being shown by Elohim the reasons for His great Anger against the Jewish
People, namely, the various forms of idol-worship which had been adopted by
them to replace the Divine Service. This behavior would result, if the Jewish
People would not repent, in the Destruction of the Once-Holy, but now
desecrated, Temple.
Tammuz is a corruption of Dumuzi, the
Accadian sun-god (the Adonis of the Greeks), the husband of the goddess Ishtar.
In the Chaldean calendar there was a month set apart in honour of this god, the
month of June to July, the beginning of the summer solstice. At this festival,
which lasted six days, the worshippers, with loud lamentations, bewailed the
funeral of the god, they sat "weeping for Tammuz" (Ezek. 8:14). The
name, also borrowed from Chaldea, of one of the months of the Hebrew calendar.
Earlier Biblical
Significance
We read in the Book of Yehoshua (Josh
10:11-14) of the Battle of Yehoshua and the People of Israel against the five
kings of the Emorite Nation. In the Biblical account, we find mention of
"great stones" thrown, as it were, by Elohim, upon the Emorites. This
could refer to hail, as the verse itself mentions (Yehoshua 10:11).
But in light of the great astronomical
miracle detailed in the following verses (12-14), in which the sun and the moon
are pictured as having not advanced, until the People of Israel had achieved
complete victory, there is here the suggestion of a tremendous suspension of
the paths in Heaven, perhaps caused by a contact of the Solar System with an
intense meteor, or asteroid, shower.
Whatever the case, according to Jewish tradition,
this great miracle is supposed to have occurred on the third of Tammuz.
Zodiac Sign of the
Month
The "sign" of the month is
"Sartan," "Cancer," or "The Crab," because a
constellation which is observed at this time of year has the appearance of a
crab. Also, the season is summer, and the hot weather of summer causes crabs to
multiply in the water.
Crabs pinch and hurt, and this month was
basically a time in which the Jewish People were hurt.
Weather: Hot season.
Wind usually NW, also East and khamseen from South. Air still and clear; heat
intense; heavy dews. Crops: Wheat harvest on highest districts; various fruits
ripe. Springs and vegetation generally dried up. Bedouins leave steppes for
mountain pastures. Elsewhere, country parched, dry and hard--a dreary and

Rosh Chodesh Tammuz is always two days,
because the preceding month, Sivan, is always "malei," or
"full;" that is, always contains 30 days. The first day of Rosh
Chodesh Tammuz is the 30th day of Sivan, and the
second day of Rosh Chodesh Tammuz is the first of Tammuz

This month is always "chaser," or
"diminished;" that is, it always contains only 29 days. Therefore,
the Rosh Chodesh of the following month, Av, is just one day, the first of Av.
Tenth month of civil year.
This month, Tammuz, followed by Av,
contain the three week period known as "Bein Ha-Metzarim," "in
the straits" of trouble between the Jewish People and Elohim. Many
tragedies occurred in this month, which led to still greater tragedies in the
next month. But our hope and belief is that ultimately, this time will become a
time of joy and redemption for the Jewish People.

- The June Bootid meteor shower is
active each year from June 26th until July 2nd. It peaks on June 27th.
Normally the shower is very weak, but occasional outbursts produce a

The source
of the June Bootids is comet 7P/Pons-Winnecke, which orbits the Sun once every
6.37 years. The comet follows an elliptical path that
carries it from a point near the orbit of Earth to just beyond the orbit of
Jupiter. Pons-Winnecke last visited the inner solar system in 2002. The comet's
tail is evidently clumpy. When our planet passes through a dense spot in the
debris stream, a meteor shower erupts.
