Second Coming ... S (Parousia)

Four Greek words are used for Christ's second coming: (1) erchomai, "to come" (Matt 24:3; 25:27; Lk 12:45; 18:5; 29:23); (2) epiphaneia, "appearing," "presence, " which occurs six times, one in II Thess 2:8 and five times in the pastoral epistles (I Tim 6:14; II Tim 1:10; 4:1, 8: Tit 2:13); (3) apokalypsis (apocalypto), "revelation" (apocalypse) or "unveiling" (Lk 17:30; I Pet 1:13); (parousia, which means "presence" and is used more frequently. It expresses the arrival and subsequent visit of a king or emperor (Matt 24:3, 27; I Cor 15:23; I Thess 2:19; 3:13; 4:15; II Thess 2:1, 8-9; James 5:7-8; II Pet 1:16; 3:4, 12; I Jn 2:28).

Christ's second coming includes two phases: His coming in the air for His own at the rapture (Jn 14:3; I Cor 15:51-53; I Thess 4:13-18; Rev 16:15), and His coming to rule over the nations of the world (Zech 14:1ff; Rev 20:4-6).
