Rev 2:15  So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.

     Nicolaitans. A heretical sect which encouraged idolatry and sexual sin; see Rev_2:14-15. Writing in the late second century, Irenaeus speculated that they were followers of Nicholas, the Jewish proselyte who was appointed shammash in the Jerusalem community (Act_6:5) but, by implication, later went astray. There is no evidence for his hypothesis.

These verses and Rev_11:7, Rev_17:24 place this chapter in the context of Daniel 7. The beast is a composite of Daniel's four beasts. Like the dragon (Rev_12:3-4), it has the ten horns and seven heads of Daniel's "fourth beast" (Rev_13:1, Dan_7:7); although unlike the dragon, it also resembles the other three (lion... bear ... leopard; Rev_13:2, Dan_7:4-6). It comes up out of the sea (Rev_13:1, Dan_7:3). It speaks arrogant blasphemies (Rev_13:5-6; Dan_7:8, Dan_7:20, Dan_7:25). It has authority to act for 42 months (Rev_13:5, Dan_7:25). Daniel himself explains,

"The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom upon earth, which will be different from all kingdoms. It will devour the whole earth, tread it down and break it in pieces. The ten horns are ten kings which will arise out of this kingdom, and another king will arise after them, and he will be different from the former ones, and he will subdue three kings. He will speak great words against the Most High, he will wear out the holy people of the Most High, and he will think to change times and laws; and they will be given into his hand for a season, seasons and half a season. But they will sit in judgment, and his dominion will be taken away, to be consumed and destroyed in the end. And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the holy ones of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions will serve and obey him. Here is the end of the matter." (Dan_7:23-27)

Many scholars regard Daniel's prophecy as fulfilled in 168-164 B.C.E. by the Seleucid king Antiochus IV, who "changed times and laws," even causing pigs to be offered to idols in place of the daily sacrifice, an abomination which desolated the Temple (Dan_9:27, Dan_11:31, Dan_12:11) for three-and-a-half years ("a season, seasons and half a season"), until the Maccabees recaptured and rededicated it, an event memorialized by the festival of Chanukkah (see Joh_10:22). But since Yeshua renewed the prophecy two centuries later, there must be a later fulfillment as well. See Rev_17:8.

In the Tanakh, "horn" often means "king." Many identify "another king" arising from the ten with the second beast (Rev_13:11-12).

The four beasts of Daniel are four kingdoms; and most scholars identify them as Babylon, Persia, Greece and Rome. Since all are ancient history, futurists (see Rev_1:1) expect the beast of Rev_13:1-8 to be a revived Roman Empire, or a nation covering the same territory, or a nation in which the brutal and depraved spirit of the Roman Empire finds expression. C. I. Scofield, expressing the Dispensationalist view, regards the head with a fatal wound (Rev_13:3) as the restored Roman Empire, which is "dead" now but will live again, to everyone's amazement. A few years ago the "newspaper exegetes" (Rev_1:1) saw the fulfillment of this prophecy in the ten members of the European Common Market. The fact that the Common Market now comprises more than ten participating nations does not necessarily disprove the futurist approach.

Non-futurists sometimes make this beast an allegory of all Satanic power mobilized against God's people on earth, especially governmental power (as opposed to religious).

Rev 17:7  And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.
