Date setting in th Bible, For and Against by the Scriptures

Date Setting in the Bible For and against

I challenge you to show me in Scriptures any reference to a set time of GOD that is in the middle of winter. Jesus was born on a set time of GOD and I challenge you to find it in the Bible...

So a challenge has been decreed and so it will be fulfilled. Many Christians believe that it is a sin to set dates.  So in this study, we will look at all the passages that Christians believe to be against date setting in the Bible and then look at all those for date setting.

In 2014, I read an e-book by Dr. William Frederick titled: “The Coming Epiphany”. Dr. Frederick believes the rapture would be in 2014, 2015, 2016, or 2017. Two Jewish brothers believed the rapture would be in 2016. Dates I have come across so far for the rapture are: 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2027, 2030, 2031, 2034, 2037, 2038, 2048, and 2055.

There is one verse which must be factored in when we have a subject like date setting.  Dr. Ken Matto.

(Deu 29:29 KJV) The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
Against Date Setting Verses.
Does the Bible Seem to Endorse Date Setting? By Dr. Ken Matto
This section is cut out in its entirety from his notes and his words.

I wish to look at a few biblical scenarios which involve specific times and let us see if we can use these as a precedent for the establishing of dates of Christ’s return.

Jonah

(Jonah 3:4 KJV) And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

Here is a specific scenario in which God tells Jonah that He plans to destroy Nineveh in 40 days unless they repent of their wickedness.

Noah

(Gen 7:4 KJV) For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.

(Gen 7:24 KJV) And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.

The universal flood of Noah’s time was a well documented event in terms of the recording of time between events. The entire experience of Noah was 371 days from the beginning of the flood to the time they left the ark.

David

(2 Sam 5:4-5 KJV) David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. {5} In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

Solomon

(1 Ki 11:42 KJV) And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.

Now it must be understood that numbers in Scripture have as much spiritual meaning as do all the words in the Bible. Some are: 40 which is the number of testing (Matthew 4:2); 42 which is the number of tribulation (Judges 12:6; 2 Kings 2:24; Rev. 11:2); 2 which is the number for the true church (Mark 6:7; Rev. 11:3-4); 5 which is the number for either grace or judgment depending on the context (Matthew 25:2).

"Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh." Matthews 25:13,

"Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." Amos 3:7,

"For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night." 1 Thessalonians 5:2

Although the Scriptures clearly places the occurrence of the these prophetic events in the near future, God had reserved the right to keep secret the dates on which they will occur. We can know that the end is close because Jesus gave us the signs of the last days (Matthew 24:3-51), but the actual dates of the events are not for us to know.
"It is not for you to know the times or the season, which the Father hath put in His own power." (Acts 1:6,7)

The coming of Jesus is known only by God No man, no angel, nor Jesus Himself knows the time of His return. Note the following Scriptures:

1.) "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no not the angels of heaven, but my Father only." Matthew 24:36,

2.) "Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come." Matthew 24:42,

Here Jesus gives clear evidence that the Christian will not know the actual date of His return. So according the teaching of Christ, neither the Christian nor the sinner will know the date.

3.) "The Lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for Him, and in an hour that he is not aware of." Matthew 24:50

4.) "Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of Man cometh at an hour when ye think not." Luke 12:40,

5.) "Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh." Matthew 24:44,

6.) "And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares." Luke 21:34,

7.) "But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in Heaven, neither the Son, but the Father." Mark 13:22,

8.) "Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is." Mark 13:33,

The Word of God, gives strong credence to the fact that the date of the return of Christ will not be known, nor will men be thinking of the actual day at the time of His return. This will be a day for prepared people, for those who want to be with Him. They know not the day of His return, but are ready for it whenever it comes.

The Scriptures narrow it down even more when Jesus used an analogy of a man taking a far journey, comparing Himself to this man.

"For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch."

"Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the Master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:"

"Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping."

"And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch." Mark 13:34-37,

In this story, authority was given to the servants, and every man was left to his work. The porter was commanded to watch for his return. The message here implies that each servant and every man was to work until the master's return, for he might come in the evening, or at midnight, or maybe at dawn at the cockcrowing, or in the morning. They would not know the time of His coming, so their work had to be done. The warning was that He might come and find them sleeping and their business undone. Only those who had their work done would find peace. Here Jesus was stating that He would depart and leave the work of the ministry in the hands of His servants until His return. But when He would return He wanted to find us so doing His will. We are commanded to watch, but this does not mean that we should quit our jobs, or close our businesses, and go on a mountain top and look into the Heavens for His return. The watching here is referring to an attitude of heart, a heart that is ready to meet its Lord, that's been washed in the Blood of Jesus and has a full assurance of faith. A person with such a heart is doing the will of God. The Word of God speaks a blessing on the man that is found so doing at His Lord's return. (Matthew 24:46; & Luke 12:43,).

In Luke 19, verses 12 through 27, Jesus spoke a parable of a certain nobleman who went into a far country. He left ten servants with ten pounds and told them to occupy till he come. In this parable, Jesus was the nobleman who was going to journey to a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. We are the servants with the ten pounds. We are commanded to occupy till He return. The word occupy here in the Greek is Pragmateuomai, which means, "To busy oneself with, to trade: occupy." We are to be about our Father's business. When Jesus returns to Rapture His Church, we are to be busy for the kingdom. Again, Jesus is coming back for His will.

Noah left us a good example, for God warned Noah of the coming flood and commanded him to build an ark. The Word of God declares, in Hebrews 11:7,

"By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith."

Here we see that after Noah was warned, he began to prepare the ark. Noah didn't know when God would send him into the ark, so he kept busy working. Noah had to be ready with the ark of God. Noah had respect and reverence for God's judgement; this is what kept Noah working on the ark all those years. Only eight souls were ready for that day. As it was in Noah's day, so shall it be at the time of Christ's return (Matthew 24:36-39).

"But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of Heaven, but may Father only."

"But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be."

"For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,"

"And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be." Matthew 24:36-3
When the flood came, it fell on those who were not ready. Those who were obedient to God's will were saved (1Peter 3:20). If Noah had been disobedient to the will of God, he and his family would have been judged with the rest.

"Date setting is not new. From the time of the Early Church until now, there have been thousands of date-setting, date-suggesting, and date-hinting schemes. All wrong. Even now, there are books and pamphlets circulating proving that Jesus will come in every year from now until the year 2001."

"Date setting is a curse to the Bible Prophecy message and may prove to be more destructive to the soundness of it's teachings, than all external enemies put together."

Apostle Paul warns us again from the Scriptures:

"that ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day Christ is at hand."

"Let no man deceive you by any means...

2 Thessalonians 2:2,3

Judging from these verses, those of Thessalonica had been troubled by the teaching that Christ has already come. Paul told them to let no man deceive them. This is my warning to you also. Try every spirit and study every doctrine. If it is truth, it will stand the test of God's Word.

Biblical Prohibitions Against Date-Setting

It is enough for something to be stated only once in the Bible for it to be true, but when God says something many times the emphasis should make such assertions even clearer. I am listing the specific passages below so that we can readily see these important biblical admonitions:

Matthew 24:36 "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. Mark 13:32 is an exact parallel.

Matthew 24:42 "Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming.

Matthew 24:44 "For this reason you be ready too; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.

Matthew 25:13 "Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour. Mark 13:33-37 is a parallel passage.

Acts 1:7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;

1 Thessalonians 5:1-2 Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.

These passages are absolute prohibitions against date-setting. They do not teach that it was impossible to know the date in the early church, but in the last days some would come to know it. They do not say that no one knows the day or the hour, except those who are able to figure it out through some scheme. No! The date of Christ's coming is a matter of God's revelation and He has chosen not to reveal it even to Christ in His humanity during His first advent (Mt. 24:36).
The Bible teaches that God's Word is sufficient for everything needed to live a life pleasing unto Christ (2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:3-4). This means that if something is not revealed for us in the Bible then it is not needed to accomplish God's plan for our lives. The date of Christ's return is not stated in the Bible, therefore, in spite of what some may say, knowing it is not important for living a godly life. The Lord told Israel "The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law" (Deut. 29:29). The date of Christ's coming has not been revealed, thus it is a secret belonging only to God.

But What About . . . ?

Some believe that there are passages in the Bible which teach that believers will be able to know the date of Christ's return. I will examine some of these passages to show how those who advocate date-setting have misused various passages in their attempts to legitimize date-setting. The Bible does not contain internal contradictions. It is wrong to think that on the one hand Scripture says "no man can know," but then on the other hand that some will be able to figure it out.

1. Luke 21:28 "But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." Some have taught that this passage implies a license to date-set. However, important contextual indicators include the fact that it refers to Jewish believers during the future seven-year tribulation, who right before the Second Coming are told to watch, not date-set, as they endure the final period of severe persecution. This does not relate to date-setting but is a general command to watch for the unknown time of the Lord's return.

2. Hebrews 10:25b "but encouraging one another; and all the more, as you see the day drawing near." Some teach that this implies that believers are able to see or know that "the day" (i.e., the Second Coming) is drawing near. While some do interpret "the day" as a reference to the Second Coming, I think that the immediate context and the context of the book of Hebrews is one that is a warning to Jewish believers before the A.D. 70 destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple not to return (i.e., apostatize) to Judaism, since the immediate future only contained wrath for those Jews who reject Jesus as their Messiah. Therefore, "the day" is not a reference to the Second Coming, instead it refers to Jerusalem's destruction by the Romans in A.D. 70.

3. 1 Thessalonians 5:4 "But you, brethren , are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief." It has been taught from this passage that believers would have to know the timing of "the day" (i.e., "the day of the Lord," see 5:2) in order to not be overtaken by it. This date-setting interpretation attaches the wrong sense to Paul's teaching. Paul is saying that they will not be overtaken because they are prepared by virtue of the fact that they are believers. All believers will be taken care of by the Lord (I believe through the Pre-Trib Rapture) so that unlike the unbeliever who will be unprepared and caught off guard, the believer is prepared.
4. Israel's Feast Cycle. The Bible teaches a cycle of seven feasts which Israel was to celebrate yearly. The seven feasts are Passover, Unleavened Bread, Firstfruits, Feast of Weeks, Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and Tabernacles. The first four feasts are celebrated in Spring, while the remaining three are commemorated in the Fall. A common interpretation concludes that the feasts also are prophetic of the career of the Messiah. The Spring cycle is said to have been fulfilled by Christ at His first coming, while the Fall cycle will be fulfilled in the future through events surrounding the Second Coming. Up to this point, I have no problem with this scheme. However, I do have a problem with those who teach that the fifth feast (Trumpets) is a reference to the Rapture. Since Rosh HaShannah (Hebrew for Feast of Trumpets) is yearly celebrated on Tishri 1 according to the Hebrew calendar (this day usually falls in September according to our contemporary calendar), and it is argued that trumpets are related to the Rapture (1 Cor. 15:52), therefore, the Rapture will occur on Tishri 1 as the Spring cycle begins to be fulfilled. This scheme argues that if the year of the Rapture can be determined, then we would know that it would occur in the fall of the year. It seems that many of the more recent and popular date-setting schemes have implemented Israel's feast cycle in some way.

Dr. Thomas Ice is also against date setting because the verses he uses to him do not tie to Leviticus 23.

So now for the for's of Date setting.
1) Aleph-Tav in Genesis 1:1 and Lamid Aleph-Tav in Genesis 1:1 ((4000 year and 6000 year)
2) 4th day events ==Genesis 1:14
3) Sabbaths (Gen 1:14; Leviticus 23)
4) Years (Genesis 1:14; Leviticus 25--Shemitah and Jubilee years especially Lev 25:20-23)
5) Isaiah 61:1-2 = Leviticus 25
6) Zeph 1:14-16  Day of the Lord is a Day of Trumpet and Alarm
7) Psalms 17=1917; Psalms 47=1947; Psalms 48=1948; Psalms 67=1967; Psalms 114-118=2014-2018.
8) Deut 24:5--1 year and Last year

10) Daniel's timeline  1260 days, 1290 days, 1335 days
11) The Day the Flood began (2nd month and 17th day--November)
12) Revelation 2:10 10 days of Tribulation =Ten years of tribulation
13) Haggai 2 (9th Month and 24th Day) Chanukkah Eve (December 24th, 2016--Jardalkalatgmail.blogspot.com). Haggai 1  6th month on the first day of the month. Haggai 2 7th month, 21st day.
14) Psalm 90:4; II Peter 3:8  --A Day = 1000 years as 1000 years = a day.
15) Genesis 6:3   And man shall live 120 years/Jubilees (2017; Psalm 117). Every 20 Jubilees = 1000 years. 120 Jubilees = 6000 years. Adam to Exodus 50 Jubilees; Exodus to 2017 = 70 Jubilees. 50+70=120 Jubilees.
16) According to Isaiah, the Day of the Lord is a one year event and covers both the Trumpet and Bowl Judgments of Revelation-- 3 places where a day = a year  (Isaiah 34:8; Isaiah 61:2; Isaiah 63:4).  It is the year of the “Lord’s vengeance” or God’s wrath (Revelation 6:17).
17) Numbers 14:34 where a day = a year
18) Ezekiel 4:6 where a day = a year.
19) Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, ... but of that Day and Hour no man knoweth not even the angels in Heaven. Day and hour refers to Leviticus 23 (Passover, Pentecost, Day of Trumpet, Day of Atonement)
20) I Thess 5:1  Seasons= Leviticus 25/23= Gen 1:14
21) 38 years  (Deut 2:14)

24) 70 years (Psalms 90:10)/Jubilles
25) 80 years (Psalms 90:10)
26) 100 years (Genesis 15:13, coupled with Gen. 15:16)
27) 3 days of darkness--History repeats itself.
28) 7th Trumpet Judgment (Rev 11:15)
29) Reve 12:1  Day of Trumpet in the Jubilee year
30) New Moon (first sliver of the new moon)
31) Zechariah dates: 11th month, 24th day (Zech 1). 9th month, 4th Day Chislev(Zech 7).
32) Esther 2:16  Esther refers to the Bride who was taken in the tenth month (Tebeth/Tevet 5777 January 2017)
33) At midnight the angel of death came in Exodus 12. At midnight the groom comes for the bride in Matt 25:1-14 with shouting, Trumpets, and a musical parade. Darkness to Light is the theme here.
34) Amo_8:9  And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:
35) Revelation teaches 3 time frames based on Day of Trumpet to Day of Atonement. These are: 10 years, 1 year, 10 days.
36) little moment, little while, little sleep. These days are shortened.
37) latter day, last day (Jn 6:40, 44, 54), that day, Wrath of God, Fire of God (Day of the Lord). According to Isaiah, the Day of the Lord is a one year event and covers the Trumpet Judgments for the first 5 months and then the Bowl Judgments for the last 7 months and is tied to Psalm 118=2018 as the year. Also tied to this verse is Deut 24:5. The Day of the Lord begins on the Day of Trumpet with the rapture/gathering/resurrection and ends on the Day of Atonement with Armageddon. This is known as the Days of Awe.

Other Verses pointing to the date. Psalm 83;Ezekiel 38- 39; Luke 17:33-37; Rev 19:17; Rev 20: 4, 7,8-15; Rev 21:1.
Now about the Sabbaths and how they are tied to Yeshua/Jesus. Matthew, Mark, Luke says the Son of Man is L-rd even of the Sabbath. That means to me that everything occurring with Yeshua will occur on a Sabbath, 4th day, Rosh Chodesh (first sliver of the new moon), full moon, or the 7th day of Feast of Tabernacles.

Yeshua was conceived in 4 BC at Chanukkah (Festival of Lights and Feast of Dedication) on a Sabbath either on Dec. 15th or the 22nd. Born in the Fall on either Yom Teruah (Day of Trumpet) or on the first Annual Sabbath of Feast of Tabernacles in 3 BCE. Messianics teach Feast of Tabernacles. He was circumcised on the 8th day (A new beginning) on the Second Annual Sabbath. According to Stellarium (free Astronomy program) and Torahcalendar.com, He was born on Yom Kippur in 3 BC (Stellarium -4). He began His ministry in 27 CE and baptized either in January (Michael Rood Chronological Gospels) or Day of Atonement (Biblical Astronomy article). Entered Jerusalem on a donkey in 29 CE (Shemitah year) on Abib 10 (Saturday), Month 1. Died on Passover (not a Sabbath) on Wednesday (4th day and 4th candle called the Christ candle or servant candle of the Menorah (7 candles)) (each candle represents a day and 1000 years). Buried on Thursday (Wednesday night by the time the first three stars came out which starts a new day). Possibly the men came out of the tomb when the stars had appeared and closed the tomb after the stars came out. This Day was the Feast of Unleavened Bread Annual Sabbath. Rose 72 hours later at the beginning of the Feast of First Fruits.

Day of Trumpet for the rapture.  Day of Atonement for Armageddon (Rev 14:20 ff, Rev 15--Day of Atonement Typology; Rev 16/19 Armageddon/Ezekiel 38-39 War)
Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) is the Messianic Kingdom at the Second Coming in 2017.
